Key characteristics of InSCI
InSCI is part of the Learning Health System für Spinal Cord Injury (LHS-SCI). The LHS-SCI is a joint effort of the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) and the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) to implement the recommendations of the International Perspectives on Spinal Cord Injury (IPSCI). As a first step of the implementation process, the International Spinal Cord Injury (InSCI) Community Survey provides the epidemiological basis for the LHS-SCI. Further steps in this joint endeavor include policy briefs and stakeholder dialogs.
InSCI is characterized by the following key aspects
- Cross-sectional survey
- Repetition of the survey at 5-year intervals (1st Survey in 2017/2018; 2nd Survey planned for 2022/2023)
- Inclusion criteria of the target population:
- adults 18 years or older
- traumatic SCI (including cauda equina syndrome) or non-traumatic SCI
- resident of the respective country living in the SCI community
- able to respond in one of the available language translations of the questionnaire
- Exclusion criteria:
- persons with spinal cord damage due to congenital etiologies such as spina bifida, neurodegenerative disorders like multiple sclerosis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or periphal nerve damage like Guillan-Barré Syndrome
- inpatients with SCI receiving first rehabilitation or first acute care
- Minimal sample size per country: 200
